This completely sold-out, monumental event took place at the prestigious Institut Français de Maurice and definitively proved that video game soundtracks are much more than just background noise. They are complex, deeply emotional musical masterpieces fully worthy of the sophisticated jazz treatment. Since 2021, our ultimate hub for geeks and nerds in Mauritius has been bringing people together, but the Play Again Jazz Concert Mauritius took our community mission to an entirely new level, seamlessly merging high art with beloved pop culture.
A “Dream Team” Line-Up 🎺
The massive success of this highly experimental project rested firmly on the shoulders of the island’s absolute finest musicians. To bring the vision of the Play Again Jazz Concert Mauritius to life, we gathered an unprecedented “Dream Team” spanning multiple generations of Mauritian jazz talent, all tasked with reinterpreting 50 years of rich gaming history.
The legendary ensemble featured:
• The Legends: Philippe Thomas (Trumpet) and Samuel Laval (Saxophone), two absolute giants of the local music scene who brought immense soul, passion, and unparalleled technical mastery to the stage.
• The Arrangers: Jocelyn Armandine (Piano) and Hermans Pierre-Louis (Saxophone), the brilliant creative minds who meticulously deconstructed iconic 8-bit melodies to create lush, sweeping jazz harmonies.
• The Rhythm Section: The infectious, driving groove was held down flawlessly by Fabien Gourdin (Drums) and the incredibly talented Augustin Brothers (Jérémy & Samuel).
We were also deeply honored to host two young, brilliant scholars from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, symbolizing the bright, promising future of Mauritian jazz on the grand stage of the Play Again Jazz Concert Mauritius.
From 8-Bit to Bebop: A Sonic Journey 🎷
The Play Again Jazz Concert Mauritius took the captivated audience on an unforgettable sonic journey through their favorite digital worlds. Iconic, nostalgic themes from classic franchises like Mario, Zelda, Tetris, and the modern indie masterpiece Hades were stripped back to their core and masterfully rebuilt.
The musicians infused these beloved gaming tracks with spontaneous improvisation, heavy swing, and complex fusion rhythms. The breathtaking performance brilliantly demonstrated how a simple chiptune melody could be effortlessly transformed into a highly sophisticated jazz standard.
